God, the Rock!

by Jonathan & Lynne Zavodney • March 3, 2025

The name of Yahweh I proclaim—Ascribe greatness to our God!—The Rock: His works are perfect; indeed all his ways are just; He is a God of faithfulness, and there is no injustice in Him; He is righteous and just.
~ Deuteronomy 32:3–4

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ!

SCHOOL  |  At the beginning of the month, I met for class and presented my research (the way Joshua, Judges, Samuel, and Kings draw from Deuteronomy 31–34). One encouraging detail is the way 1–2 Samuel is framed with two poems that draw from Deuteronomy 32: Both Hannah’s prayer (1 Sam 2:1–10) and David’s song (2 Sam 22:1–51) present their poems as a meditation of Yahweh as Rock, something Moses’s song does very intentionally (Deut 32:3–4). This is just a snapshot, but still very beautiful! I’ll be completing that course this month and looking to the next one. The Lord is kind!

FELLOWSHIP  |  Serving with Dr. DeRouchie has been a delight as I learn much more than might be expected in a context like this. Specifically, I wrote several proposal ideas for future publication, and I helped generate a list of his publications to be translated into Amharic (language of Ethiopia).

Z-HOME  |  In God’s kindness, sickness has passed and the warmer weather is coming! We continue to meet neighbors and foster community organically and through formal events. God has already opened sweet doors to engage our neighbors with Jesus’s love. In the midst of our settling in here, Lynne, Nora, and I continue to find and change and change and change rhythms and routines as Nora grows. Her latest developments—that have kept her from napping because she’s excited 😊—are blowing raspberries, rolling, and sitting up in her special chair (see photos below). True to her name, she is such a little light in our home and community!

PRAYER  |  Thank you for your faithfulness to pray. As we serve in our various contexts, we’ve noticed spiritual opposition in different ways, so your prayers do more than you know. Please pray:

  • That God would establish the work of our hands (Psalm 90:17) as we labor for His sake in our various spheres

  • That God would be pleased to use us powerfully for His name’s sake in our community, bringing many to salvation in Christ

May the joy of Jesus be yours in the fullest measure, as you set your eyes on things not seen, eagerly awaiting our Lord’s return! May it be soon.
